How to loosen 2 safety bolts in the crankcase cover of a Vespa Sprint, Primavera or Piaggio Zip

If you have purchased a new Vespa Sprint, Primavera or Piaggio Zip, you will have 2 special crankcase bolts at the bottom right of your crankcase cover, which are not easy to open.
These are two Allen bolts with a flat side for security, so that private individuals cannot simply tinker with the scooter. (This is in accordance with EU Regulation 44/2014 Annex II measures against manipulation)

These two special bolts in the crankcase cover can be loosened in several ways:

• Flatten one side of an Allen bit, for example with a file. This will allow the bit to fit into the crankcase bolts.
• Take a good grip on the crankcase bolts with a pair of water pump pliers or grip pliers and loosen them by hand. Be careful not to damage the crankcase cover.
• Grind a minus into the two crankcase bolts. This will allow you to loosen them with a large flathead screwdriver.

Re-install original crankcase bolts for Vespa/Piaggio

Once you have removed the secured sump bolts, it is important not to refit them. This is to prevent them from becoming impossible to loosen next time.
Therefore, replace these two special crankcase bolts with two original crankcase bolts from Vespa/Piaggio. These are exactly the same OEM flange bolts as in the rest of the crankcase cover, with size M6 x 30.

The mounting of new bolts in the crankcase cover is important . If you do not mount bolts back, dirt and rust will get into the thread. In addition, it is of course unprofessional, since it is clearly visible.

The original bolts for the crankcase cover can be ordered cheaply from De Scooter Shop and are available from stock.

Tip! Lubricate all crankcase bolts with copper grease or another type of grease to prevent the bolts from rusting. This will make them easier to loosen next time.
